declared across our entire area. doug kammerer right now is here to explain why we should keep a close eye on this one. >> the reason for this, jim, is not because we have a hurricane to the south. it's because what's going to be happening after. this right now, it says it's a hurricane, but most likely it's a tropical storm. but do not let that fool. the 8:00 advisory, i bet it will come out as tropical storm sandy, but it doesn't matter, don't let a weakening storm now fool you later. because this storm is going to continue to make its way up the coast. right now has winds of 57 miles an hour. that was the latest as of the 5:00 advisory from the national hurricane center, moving to the north at 7 miles per hour. it is expected to become a tropical storm most likely around 00, 11:00 advisory. the track is what you want to focus on here. the cone of uncertainty takes it anywhere from boston, to the richmond area and anywhere in between is going to see very strong winds. not going to be the rain, most likely not the flooding in our region, it will be the winds. let's take a look

. but we could be in for a round of strong storms. storm team 4 chief meteorologist doug kammerer is monitoring our conditions this afternoon. >> right now, this afternoon, looking very, very nice. temperatures of 70 degrees currently. the winds gusting at times upwards of 15 to 25 miles an hour. the airport only about 8 miles an hour, the winds out of the south. we are also seeing plenty of cloud cover, but also peaks and pokes of sunshine, too. take a look at the numbers around the region. most everybody into the 70s to the east. 60s back to the west. 65 in hagerstown, 64 in winchester, 71 in la plata. 74 degrees towards fredericksburg. no rain around our region right now. but over the next couple of hours we'll see an area down to the south, a few showers could turn into a few thunderstorms as it moves farther to the north. this would get to our area in the next two to three hours. here's the frontal boundary back to the west. it has strong to potentially severe storms with it. this will continue to move our way. it will be making its way through this area in the late evening a

today. but clouds are moving in now. we could see some changes. chief meteorologist doug kammerer is outside enjoying the last little bits of this day. doug? >> a little bit on the breezy side. the rain is now moving in. some of that rain could be rather heavy as we move into the overnight hours. let's look outside right now, 68 degrees. winds gusting to over 20 miles an hour in parts of the region. we are seeing temperatures that are starting to fall a little. they're not going to fall much. 70 in leesburg, down to the south fredericksburg coming in at 71 degrees. that's where the rain is now. down around stafford county, around the fredericksburg area, fauquier county and warrenton, that's the first batch of rain. there's aot more rain coming back to the west. and down to the south in the carolinas, that also making its way our way up i-95. we'll talk more about that, and when you may need these tomorrow, too. >>> coming up, is it a way to fight crime or a violation of privacy. the controversy over recording conversations on public buses. >>> i'm jackie bensen on wisconsin avenu

team 4 meteorologist doug kammerer said severe weather could be on the way. how soon? >> it's going to be tomorrow, and probably tomorrow night. outside right now, it does not get better than this. most of the forecast has a lot of days like this in it. again, tomorrow could be a different story. we could be seeing severe weather. right now, a very big storm is taking shape in the middle part of the country. 68 degrees currently. winds out of the south at 9 hour. per around the rest of the region, simply gorgeous. temperature of 66 degrees right now in gaithersburg, 68 degrees in washington, and 70 degrees in through the fredericksburg area. once again, very nice conditions. with plenty of sunshine and light winds, this is simply a gorgeous, gorgeous afternoon. there's no rain right now. we're not going to see any rain for probably the next 24 hours. but there is that chance of severe weather during the evening hours tomorrow. we'll talk much more about that storm coming up. but i'll take you in through your morning. fairfax county, burke, great afternoon. looking very good toward f

for possibly a stormy night. storm 4 chief meteorologist doug kammerer is tracking everything on the radar. how is it looking? >> right now looking at the showers and storms off to the west. and down to our south, too. nobody is seeing any rain right now. 69 degrees at the airport. looking at mostly cloudy skies. quin the winds now coming off the potomac towards the airport now. 70 degrees in leesburg. 73 in fredericksburg. a little cooler to the west. winchester right now sitting at 64 degrees. you can see on the radar, no real shower activity around the immediate area. but notice just south of fredericksburg, starting to see some showers entering spotsylvania county. that's the first area of rain we'll see just to the north of richmond. it will move right up i-95 and be in the washington, d.c., area in just two hours. the area in west virginia, strong storms back there, they could try to move through our region overnight tonight. most areas will get wet overnight tonight. we'll also talk about what you can expect tomorrow. tomorrow morning could be a little rough. pat? >> all right. thanks. >

today. but not everybody's done with it just yet. storm 4 chief meteorologist doug kammerer is here with that. >> yeah, it's funny, pat, because when we say most of the rain has moved out, most of the area. if you take 100% of the area right now, probably 90% of it is dry. but the 10% that has the rain is about 90% of where the people live. you can see where the rain is coming through downtown right now. also coming through many areas of montgomery county, fairfax county, getting hit hard by this rain. also down towards prince william county. you can see exactly what i'm talking about as we zoom on in here. right around olney, georgia avenue, towards aspen hill and 28 here on the intercounty connector, all seeing fairly heavy rain. as we move to the south, in through fairfax county, george washington memorial parkway, around mclean and tyson's corner, all seeing that heavy rain. and coming into the district and down to the south, some heavy rain along i-95. this is between lorton, franconia and around springfield. this will affect the rush hour tonight along the beltway, from i-95 a

as people rush to salvage what they can. >> doug kammerer is here to kick off team coverage with a look at the path. >> we have a new path that's just come in from the national hurricane center. hurricane sandy just off the coast of florida. you can see all the rain in the outer bands making their way through miami, upwards of 60-mile-an-hour winds. the storm itself is still over the bahamas. we don't have radar out that far, but the center clearly defined here. we're going to be watching this one very closely over the next couple of days. this is the latest track from the national hurricane center, the latest winds 90 miles an hour. that is down a little bit, moving north-northwest at 15 miles an hour. still a strong cat thegoer 1 storm and that's pretty much where this is going to be, probably a cat 1, maybe a cat 2 over the next few days. this may state a cat 1. doesn't matter the strength of the hurricane because once it moves our way it has the potential to become a superstorm. the latest track has now shifted farther to the south, more in line to our area, and i think we are going

are on storm watch right now. many of you may have heard some thunder out there. let's get right to it. doug hill is standing by. >> it has been kind of right now, in arlington, 63 degrees. a lot of lightning flashes. they have been out there all evening, but slowly moving eastward. th are in frederick county. severe thunderstorm warnings until 11:34 frederick county. that threat is diminishing right now out in washington county. there will be more chances the next few hours for showers and storms. we expect most of them to be garden variety. the rainfall totals are impressive. the good news is, it will taper off overnight. >> we have several developments in the big story we mentioned at the top. the prince george's county police department is in morning to night after losing one of their own. police are talking about the crash and officer kevin bowden. >> we were over the scene where it happened in clinton. we were first on the scene of this crash. >> the accident reconstruction team has wrapped up its work at this intersection. investigators spent hours going over the same piece by piece.
